When installing Guide HandsFree on your computer, it is important that you do certain things in the right order to avoid errors later on, importantly training for your voice with Guide HandsFree and NOT with Dragon Naturally Speaking.
This article describes the steps that you need to take for a sucessfull installation.
NOTE: due to the security features in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, blind users may need assistance from a fully sighted person in order to complete the installation process.
Before installing, please refer to the system requirements for Guide HandsFree to ensure your computer meets these requirements.
STEP 1: Install Dragon NaturallySpeaking (versioin 11 required for Guide HandsFree v6).
For the latest version of the User Guide and other resources for Dragon, please see their website:

- Continue to click Next, taking all the recommended options.
- To start Dragon, double-click the Dragon desktop icon.
STEP 2: Activate Dragon.
When you open Dragon for the first time, you will be prompted to activate your software. When prompted, first click 'Activate Now' and then 'Activate Automatically'. NOTE: You must be connected to the Internet to activate the software.

STEP 3: Creating or upgrading a Dragon User Profile.
Before you can use Dragon, you will need to plug in your microphone into either the mic-in jack or a USB port, depending on the style of your microphone.
The first time you start Dragon you will be presented with a series of screens, they will walk you through the complete process of creating the best possible user profile for your situation.
Don't rush through it. It's very important!
Once you have completed the user profile and the initial accuracy training you will be prompted to start your voice training. We recommend that you skip this initial training within Dragon and you perform it through Guide at a later point. Guide will make this whole process so much easier as you will be presented with audio commands and can simply follow Guide's voice prompts.
Now you will be asked if you would like dragon to search for words automatically. Untick the sent emails and documents boxes.
Then you will be asked if you would like to improve the accuracy on a regular basis. Select 'don’t prompt for accuracy training'.
You will then be asked if Nuance can collect data from your computer. Select the option 'do not run data collection'.
This process is now complete, Exit Dragon.
STEP 4: Install Guide HandsFree.
Now the Dragon installation and activation is complete and your user profile has been created, you can insert your Guide Handsfree disc into the DVD drive on your computer to begin installing Guide HandsFree.
- Insert your Guide HandsFree disc, it should automatically start the install and the Guide voice will be heard. If you do not hear this then your PC is not autoplay enabled, in this case you can double click on your DVD drive icon to manually start the Guide install.
- When Guide is speaking it will first prompt you to "press Enter to install Guide", do this.
- Guide will then proceed to read out the terms and conditions. Once you have read these terms and conditions and are ready to proceed press Enter.
- Guide will now tell you that this is a new install and "press enter to continue".
- Guide will now tell you that the install is imminent and to either "press enter to proceed" or press P to change the destination of where you would like to install guide. We recommend you use the default setting and press Enter.
- The installation is now about to begin if you are happy to proceed press enter.
Once the Guide installation has completed the computer will restart and then run Guide Handsfree for the first time.
STEP 5: Activate Guide HandsFree.
For this step you will need your unique Dolphin serial number that was supplied when you purchased your Guide HandsFree software.
- If you are connected to the internet, press 1 to insert your unique serial number to perform automatic internet activation. If you do not have the internet then you will need to contact Dolphin Customer Services on 0845 225 5005 to manually activate your software.
- Once you have activated your copy of Guide Handsfree you will be prompted to restart your computer.
STEP 6: Begin voice training with Guide HandsFree.
Once your computer has restarted it is advisable to perform your initial voice training within Guide HandsFree.
- Open Guide HandsFree.
- From the main menu select option 9 (more menu options) then 8 (system settings) then 9 (voice recognition settings) then 4 (voice training) then 1 (level 1 training) then 1 again to actually begin the Guide Handsfree level 1 training - This process will take approx 1 hour.
