Simon gives Blind College a run for their money!

9th May, 2011

A big congratulations to Dolphin's AltFormat Brand manager, Simon Kitchen, for successfully completing his first marathon this weekend. Simon enjoys keeping fit and setting himself new challenges, having run a couple of half marathons before this seemed like the ideal thing to try next! Simon entered the 'Shakespeare Marathon' earlier this year and decided he wanted to raise money for charity for extra motivation during the 26.2 mile challenge. Simon chose New College Worcester (NCW) to benefit from his fundraising; New College Worcester is a residential College for blind and partially sighted children and young people aged 11-19 years. Having worked at Dolphin for 4 years,

Simon's marathon completion certificate.Simon said: "supporting people with low vision and blindness is something that has become really important to me. I've visited NCW a few times, and seen all the great work that goes on in not only teaching students for their GCSEs and A levels, but developing life skills that prepare young people with visual impairments to be independent."

The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Stratford upon Avon in the UK, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The Shakespeare Marathon took place in the morning on Sunday May 8th, Simon completed the run in 4 hours, 35 minutes and 24 seconds, averaging a tidy 10 minutes per mile. Colleagues at Dolphin are very impressed with Simon's endless enthusiasm and never doubted that he would be able to complete the race.

So far Simon has raised over £400 for the college. If you would like to help Simon raise more money for NCW, you can donate online through his Just-Giving web page.

Anne Priestley, Fundraising Manager at NCW, said: "We were so pleased when Simon told us he was going to run the marathon for the College; we are non-maintained, so donations to the college make a massive difference. I'd just like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to Simon from all of us and well done for completing the race in such a great time".

Details of Simon's run and other activities can be found on the fundraising page of the NCW website (external link).
