Web Browsing Basics

Chapter 1: Overview

This tutorial helps you take your first steps towards reading web pages and browsing the Internet using the keyboard.

Through practical lessons you will learn about the different ways you can move around a web page using the keyboard and quickly get to the content you really want to read.

This tutorial is for screen reader users only. You will require SuperNova Access Suite or SuperNova Screen Reader version 13.0 to complete the exercises ahead.

Before starting this tutorial.

To review a web page using the keyboard requires you to use the Dolphin Cursor.

The Dolphin Cursor is a special kind of cursor created by SuperNova. The Dolphin Cursor lets you explore a web page line by line, or word by word, or letter by letter using the keyboard.

You must be familiar with the following Dolphin Cursor Movement hot keys to be able to complete the lessons ahead.

  • To move by character, press LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW.
  • To move by word, press LEFT CONTROL + LEFT ARROW or LEFT CONTROL + RIGHT ARROW.
  • To move by line, press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW.
  • To move to the top of the page, press CONTROL + HOME.
  • To move to the bottom of the page, press CONTROL + END.
  • To move by object, press TAB or SHIFT + TAB.

If you are unfamiliar with these Dolphin Cursor hot keys then please spend a few minutes familiarising yourself with these keystrokes. Then, when ready, select the link below to move on to the next chapter. To select a link, simply move the Dolphin Cursor onto the link and press ENTER. This will click the link and open the new web page.
