SuperNova Access Suite Case Study: 86 year old Rosalind masters computers.

Dolphin's Supernova has made this possible.
At 86 years of age Rosalind is partially sighted and for the last 8 years she has been registered blind, nevertheless, her hobbies include bowls, which she plays at the Blind Club in Eastbourne, where she is a member.
Rosalind has lived in Eastbourne for over 30 years and has recently started an Art class, but her most exciting activity is learning to use the computer. She says, “The computer is the most wonderful challenge, to be able to keep in touch with my family and friends and to amuse myself playing games keeps my brain working”. The latest magnification and speech functions within Dolphin’s Supernova have made this possible.
When Rosalind first arrived at Global Information Centre in July 2003, she explained that she was very visually impaired but wanted to be able to learn how to use a computer. All her family could use one and she did not want to be left out. Her sheer enthusiasm impressed everybody at the Centre so much that they knew they wanted to give her the best opportunity to achieve her goal. They assessed Rosalind's visual capabilities, and with health and safety issues uppermost in their minds, they set about finding the best way forward for her. It transpired that she had been to several centres in Eastbourne, but had been turned away, then she approached the Global Information Centre. She told us that as soon as she stepped into the centre and got to know everyone there, she felt sure they could help. Jasvinder Sirah, from the GIC, obtained dictation software and EAVS kindly provided a copy of Dolphin’s award winning Supernova reader magnifier, and with these special aids Rosalind was able to start learning how to use the keyboard. Rosalind became proficient with the keyboard and got an e-mail address, which meant she could e-mail her brother and receive e-mails back from him. She is such a dynamic person, and her progress prompted the GIC to enter her for a UK online award for the most inspirational learner.
The GIC accompanied Rosalind to the BBC Southampton TV studios, on November the 18th 2003, were she was selected from many contestants from all over the South East. She was very proud to receive the award of UK Online Centres South East Most Inspirational Learner. She progressed to the point were she really wished for and needed a computer at home. Jas at GIC made enquiries and with the help of Steve Bennett from Dolphin Computer Access, Eastbourne Association of Voluntary Services, Eastbourne Lion’s Club and Eastbourne Blind Society, her wish came true, to own a computer that was designed for the visually impaired.
The computer has changed her life. Becoming visually impaired at such a late stage in her life could have meant being excluded from something she regards as a necessary and exciting tool. Everyone at Dolphin and the GIC thinks Rosalind is a remarkable individual, who really does inspire others and demonstrates that a visual impairment need not be a barrier to achievement, and at 86 years of age there can be no better proof that ‘you are never to old to learn’. Well done Ros.
