SuperNova Access Suite Case Study: The Royal Blind School in Edinburgh chooses Supernova to maintain student excellence.

Established in 1793, The Royal Blind School in Edinburgh is the third oldest blind school in the world. The school supports 139 students across two campuses. The Canaan Lane Campus specialises in multiple and complex disability needs whilst the Craigmillar Campus supports primary and secondary education needs up to the age of 19 years. For over 13 years the school has been providing computer access for their students through a combination of Dolphin products and Freedom Scientific products.

Rob Jones, Head of the Business Education Department, says "We have always been pleased with the Dolphin products used in the past and have always had excellent support from Dolphin. When we recently reviewed the changes in version 5.21 during a classroom demonstration, the student's reactions to the new features and its ease of use signaled that Supernova was the way ahead. It is very important that the access software chosen is reliable, simple to install and easy to use and has the students support, in this way we can build student independence and freedom in the classroom. Whilst Supernova has always been a very stable product that seldom caused the computers to crash, it now has better support for applications such as Excel, Access and the Internet, making it the perfect choice for the school library and other education departments". The award winning Supernova is the only product available that combines screen magnification, speech and Braille support in a single package. There is no need to buy a separate screen reader and screen magnifier, Supernova combines the world's most powerful screen magnifier with the world's most stable screen reader, and also supports more speech synthesizers and Braille devices than any other product available. Supernova is ideal for individuals who want more flexible screen access or for larger organizations serving a range of visual needs.

Following recent investment of over £250,000 in IT, The Royal Blind School has just committed to a Multi-User licence for Supernova users, including annual software maintenance. This will ensure that all their systems are operating the latest version software. The school also plans to explore how its training programme can be extended to include interested parties outside of the Royal Blind School, allowing blind and visually impaired computer users to experience the benefits of Dolphin software during training days.

Steve Bennett, Dolphin Sales Director concludes, "The enthusiasm of the students for our products really does make my job very fulfilling. The benefits of the latest Supernova software will make a real difference to the students in Edinburgh and will help them succeed in later life. The beauty of Dolphin software is that it is not only very stable and reliable, but can also be installed on network servers as well as PCs, so it can be used campus wide on all terminals".
