Louise Hamilton an outreacher worker for Harrow Adult & Community Learning was very kind in dedicating some of her time to telling us how they have adopted EasyProducer to create their unique training materials. Louise specializes in training visually impaired people in the Harrow area on how to use the day to day living devices from the mobile phone to devices such as the “Book courier”, a digital reading device and DAISY player.
“I mainly teach people over 30, who have visual impairments and therefore have trouble reading small print. So when I heard about Easyproducer it seemed to solve my problem of how to give out the learning materials to my class”
To maximize the students learning time Louise wanted to provide materials that they could take home and go over again at their own pace. “When we first started to run the course we tried to put the material onto tape. It took us ages and I kept on making mistakes. But now, after getting EasyProducer, we can give our learners the choice of either the materials by email, large print or on a CD using EasyProducer. Most learners found it really useful to have the material on a CD so they could take it home and listen to what was covered in the session and then be ready for the following session.”
One of the best features of EasyProducer is the ability to extract the MP3 from the DAISY book and save it to a portable digital audio player or MP3 player, such as an Ipod. Louise agreed that this could be the future of AltFormat learning. “Being an Ipod user myself I can really see DAISY / MP3 files taking off as everyone seems to be listening these days as opposed to reading. We do put MP3 files onto the book courier (accessible MP3 player) and this is extremely useful.”
The DAISY and MP3 training materials created by EasyProducer have been such a success that Harrow Adult & Community Learning has bought 3 licenses for a few of their centres, as they look to provide the latest and best alternative formats for their students.
