I’m getting fluent with Dolphin Publisher and it’s doing for me almost everything I need... Best of all is the ease and speed with which Publisher is enabling me (in the talking texts I make) to highlight each word or phrase in the text at the exact moment it is being spoken aloud by the computer... I now can do the same work in about a tenth of the time and I expect this to improve quite a bit more as using Dolphin Publisher becomes second nature to me.

Publisher is the most comprehensive DAISY production tool, capable of producing full text and audio books using either human narration or synthetic speech. It is aimed at anyone wishing to produce materials on a large scale, and is used, for example, by the RNIB Transcription Centres at Tarporley and Ivybridge, who produce numerous leisure and academic titles each year.

As a fairly new and emerging technology, there’s a very few number of playback software and hardware for DAISY. I’ve hands on tried and made use of the majority of playback hardware and software. If RFB&D has it, I used it. For our production, both EasyProducer and Dolphin Publisher are found to be the best in their market. Having both EasyProducer and Publisher allows us the luxury of assigning tasks based on difficulty. Smaller simpler products we can do using EasyProducer, while more difficult intense projects we use Publisher. This allows us to have a more productive and efficient office with a solutions-based set of tools.

The RNIB recently used Dolphin Publisher to create seven Digital Talking Books, as part of a 12 month pilot, sponsored by the DfES. We created full text and audio books to support Key Stage 3 literacy (11 to 14 year olds) in three secondary schools and evaluated the benefits over the course of the 12 months. The results were extremely positive. Using EasePublisher and EaseReader the whole class was able to use exactly the same materials, and benefit from a new learning experience. This could be the way forward in every classroom.
