SuperNova Magnifier Case Study: Radio Sound Technician Peter lights up the airwaves thanks to Dolphin Lunar

Peter Lindqvist has worked as a sound technician at Sveriges Radio in Gothenburg, Sweden, since 1983. Sveriges Radio is a non-commercial, independent public service radio broadcaster, broadcasting to approximately 4 million Swedes every day.

It was Peter's dream to work in radio, if not for his love for music, then for his ardent passion for radio. Therefore it came as no surprise when Peter got involved in pioneering the local radio station in Gothenburg in the early 80's.

Peter is also visually impaired, with one eye totally blind, and the other low vision. However this doesn´t stop him fulfilling his ambitions working as a professional sound technician, and together with his producer and link man, Peter remains responsible for the broadcasting and recording on the station.

Every second counts

While preparing to broadcast, Peter sits in front of a number of monitors, all of which are running Lunar screen magnification software from Dolphin Computer Access. Peter checks the adjustments on each microphone. It is time for a live broadcasting of one of the most popular nationwide Swedish radio programmes and Peter is prepared. 43 seconds left to the live broadcasting...

"Without my magnification software Lunar I would never have managed to do my job. In my job we are working with seconds and milli seconds. It is very important to have a responsible system that you can trust fully all the times when broadcasting".

Switching from Analogue to Digital: "Lunar just worked out of the box"

Almost everything from recording on the field to broadcasting in the station at Sveriges Radio today is digitally produced. A Swiss system from Mandozzi Elettronica is one of Sveriges Radio´s newest digital systems replacing the old analogue mixers. Even the central switchboard used to connect the different studios has changed in recent years.

Peter was weary that such a change in the system may cause problems for his magnification software Lunar, but this was certainly not the case! After a couple of days once the new system had been mastered, Peter was back broadcasting again using the new technique and Lunar was as quick and responsive as before.

"I tested a number of different magnification software, but these resulted in a slow system and not a good enough contrast for my purposes. Lunar just worked out of the box. My personal settings for colour, contrast and brightness were the only things that needed to be adjusted."

The next step: Seamless access to Sveriges Radio group's network

Peter's work at the station is currently limited by which computers have Lunar software installed. Peter likes to visit other stations within the Sveriges Radio group to teach the new kids a thing or two. However, without Lunar software installed on the computers at each site, the broadcasting system becomes completely inaccessible, and Peter's visits a waste of his valuable time.

But with support from the Swedish Labour Market Board, Dolphin Computer Access, and staff at ICAP (a Swedish Dolphin dealer) Peter now has the opportunity to install Lunar on every computer within the Sveriges Radio group.

"The next project is to arrange a network installation of Lunar which means that Lunar starts automatically independent of which computer I log in to."

Back to work ...

It was a pleasure to get a chance to meet Peter, and find out how Lunar was delivering independence to his everyday life. However, always mindful of the seconds ticking away before going live, Peter got back to work:

"Excuse me", says Peter "In 5 minutes are we live broadcasting again. It is 300 seconds. Cheers!"
