Read the transcript of video: Borders College Support Tutor for visually impaired students talks about Dolphin Guide
Interview with Sam Anderson, Lecturer and Course Tutor at Borders College.
Craig Mill (interviewer): "So why don't you tell us a little about the class Sam, that you are on here?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "It's a class with visually impaired students and we are looking at using computers for their general studies in the college and also some students come in to learn about basic computing. Specifically looking at emails and to sort out word processing."
Craig Mill (interviewer): "What sort of issues have you had in the past?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "We started off using JAWS software and again it was one of the first programs that I had used and I was quite familiar to it. Students did take to it but there was a lot of control key to learn and you really had to know a computer to use JAWS well and now we have moved to the Dolphin Guide software it's made it a lot easier."
Craig Mill (interviewer): "In what way is it easier?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "The basic controls are numbers and it's sort of a whole package in one. There's no jumping between an email system and an internet package and a Microsoft Office solution, it's all held in one system."
Craig Mill (interviewer): "So if you have a student who is maybe new to computing and they come to the class, it's not the sort of thing that they have to learn maybe three or four applications. Is that right?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "Yes, you just have to learn one application and I think it builds confidence in the student really. As its using your number keys to control or arrow keys to access the main use and again it's the same controls for each package in that program."
Craig Mill (interviewer): "How do you think it's benefitted the students that are coming to the college?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "Confidence, students are now emailing each other, emailing me asking for information, accessing the internet, producing Word documents and attaching them to emails in all classes."
Craig Mill (interviewer): "So it's building up skills, building up confidence, it's a bit of a winner?"
Sam Anderson (Interviewee): "I would say it's the Dolphin Guide is a package I would use to build confidence with students and with people moving onto mainstream classes and maybe then I would incorporate JAWS and with the confidence they have got from Dolphin Guide would help them hopefully learn JAWS."
