Read the transcript of video: Play NLS BARD books with Dolphin Guide (US Guide only)

Dolphin Guide now offers users the ability to download books from the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, otherwise known as the NLS. Dolphin Guide can then unzip them and help you to transfer them to your chosen portable book player, such as the popular VictorReader Stream from HumanWare.

The NLS books are encrypted and you must apply to the NLS BARD website to get an authorisation file to load onto your portable book player. To learn more, visit the BARD website at nlsbard.loc.gov

Since many NLS audio books are quite large in size, we recommend that in order to decrease the amount of time taken to transfer the downloaded NLS book from your computer's hard disc to your Daisy hardware player, that you place the SD Ram card from your Daisy hardware player into a spare SD Ram slot on your computer. If you do not have one of these, you can purchase and SD Ram card reader for your computer. Transferring the downloaded book directly to the SD Ram card in this manner is a lot faster than transferring it to your Daisy hardware player using a conventional cable.

So let's take a look at how we can download and transfer a book onto our VictorReader Stream.

From Guide's main menu, select option 3 'Access a Website'. In the address box of Guide's web browser, type the address of the NLS BARD website and then press 'enter'. Log in to the NLS BARD website using your subscription e-mail and password. Select a book to read, and then press 'enter' on its download link. Guide will then say 'download file to my documents?' and will state the file name of the NLS book you've just selected. Make a mental note of this file name and press 'y' for yes to start the download. Your download may take a few minutes, depending on the speed of your internet connection and size of the book.

Throughout the download process, Guide will keep you informed as to its progress.

When the download has completed, Guide will say 'downloaded successfully to my documents'. When this occurs, press 'escape' to jump back to the address box of Guide's web browser and type 'close' and enter.

Back in Guide's main menu, select option 9 'More Menu Options'. In the 'Main Menu - More Options' menu, press 5 for 'File Manager'. In the 'File Manager' menu, press 6 'Transfer NLS book'. Guide will then display the files in your 'My Documents' folder.

Use your arrow keys to select the file name of the book that you want to transfer to your Daisy hardware player and press 'enter'. Guide will then ask you to use your arrow keys to select the destination folder on your SD Ram card or connect a Daisy hardware player, to which you want to copy the previous selected book. Select the destination folder and the press 'enter'.

The book will then be transferred to the selected destination folder. This may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the book. Once the copying process has finished, you are then ready to read your new book on your Daisy hardware player.
