Read the transcript of video: Speech features of SuperNova Reader Magnifier
Hello and welcome to the Dolphin video tutorials.
In this tutorial, I am going to be demonstrating the speech functions of SuperNova Reader Magnifier, previously known as LunarPlus.
SuperNova Reader Magnifier has three synthesisers, Orpheus, Eloquence and the new Nuance Vocalizer, which takes over from RealSpeak. These synthesisers can be changed by going in to the speech menu, into voice preferences and then into synthesiser configuration. In here you will find a 'select synthesiser' button which will allow you to choose from a list of available synthesisers.
Each synthesiser has a number of different voices. To choose a new voice for your synthesiser again go into the speech menu, into voice preferences and this time to the voice and language configuration tab. In here you can pick your new voice from a list of available options.
You can turn the voice on and off, either with the hot key LEFT CONTROL + 0, or through the control panel. The speed and volume of the voice can also be altered, again with hot keys or through the control panel. There are two spin able controls in the speech tab which allow you to do this quickly and easily.
For a list of speech hot keys press CAPS LOCK + F1 to open the help system and go to the SuperNova hotkeys entry.
SuperNova Reader Magnifier has two reading tools that allow you to continuously read a document.
The options available are read from here and the Doc reader.
Read from here can be started and stopped with NUMBER PAD +. The reading will start from the cursor position and continue to the end of the document or until you press number pad plus, or escape or left control.
Read from here can also be started and stopped with the middle mouse button. This function is known as click and read from here. Simply position the cursor where you wish to start reading and pressing the middle mouse button.
One more option relating to read from here is the enhanced read from here. This option can be turned on and off either from the speech menu, under read from here, or from the read from here button on the speech tab. Enhanced read from here not only reads the document, but shows the current text being spoken as moving text in a separate magnified window.
The Doc reader function loads the text that you wish to read into the Doc reader window, which can then be controlled with hot keys or buttons.
To start Doc reader press CAPS LOCK + NUMBERPAD +, or click on the Doc reader button in the visual tab of the control panel.
To start and stop reading, either use the start stop button at the top of the Doc reader window or press SPACEBAR.
SuperNova Reader Magnifier can read single lines, sentences, words or characters as well as entire documents. More information on these controls can be found in the help system but here are a few to get you going.
To read a line of text press NUMBERPAD 6
To read a word press NUMBERPAD 5. To spell the word press NUMBERPAD 5 for a second time, and to spell it using the phonetic alphabet press NUMBERPAD 5 a third time.
To read a character press NUMBERPAD 4.
A full list of the speak keys can be accessed by pressing CAPS LOCK + F1 and going to the SuperNova hotkeys entry.
Everyone has different preferences to how much information is announced when typing and reading. SuperNova Reader Magnifier has several options that can be changed in order to tailor the speech to individual requirements.
What is announced as you type can be changed by going to the speech menu and selecting character echo, or simply clicking on the character echo button in the speech tab. The options are:
- Characters, which will tell SuperNova to read each character that you type.
- Words, which will announce every word that you type.
- Characters and words, which will announce all characters and then the completed word.
- And none, which will not announce anything as you type.
Other options that can be changed are within the text style announcements dialogue, which can again be accessed from the speech menu or from the speech tab.
In here you can alter punctuation levels, how numbers are announced, and if you wish capitals, repeats and selected items to be announced.
There are 4 tabs relating to different areas. Edit areas, which could be a Microsoft Word or note pad document. Prompt areas, which could be a Windows message, menus and read from here.
SuperNova Reader Magnifier will announce things on the screen such as menu entries, titles of documents and icons demonstrated here with the start menu. This can be done by navigating with the keyboard or by hovering your mouse over an item. To turn the 'read text under mouse pointer' option off go to 'general announcements' either from the speech menu or from the speech tab.
For more information on SuperNova reader magnifiers speech functions access the SuperNova help system with CAPS LOCK + F1.
Thank you.
